SINGAPORE – In the heart of Chile’s Atacama Desert, an ever-expanding mountain of discarded garments casts a shadow over the surreal landscape of ice-capped volcanoes and turquoise lakes – and has not abated since 2021.

These clothes come from fast fashion labels, such as H&M and Zara, as well as ultra-fast fashion manufacturers like Shein with even quicker production cycles.
